Amazon MGM Studios is making progress on the live-action Voltron movie. After winning the rights in August 2024, they engaged in a bidding war with several other companies. Daniel Quinn-Toye has been cast as the lead male role in the film, which is expected to start shooting this fall in Australia. Despite having no film credits to his name, Quinn-Toye has appeared in an episode of BBC Three’s Badults, worked as an extra on an episode of Outlander, and served as an understudy to Tom Holland during the West End production of Romeo and Juliet this past spring.
The upcoming live-action Voltron movie is being directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for directing films such as “Dodgeball: A True Undergod Story,” “We’re the Millers,” “Central Intelligence,” “Skyscraper,” and “Red Notice.” The casting process for the male and female leads involved extensive screen tests in early and mid-September. Plot details for the movie are currently undisclosed.
The Voltron franchise is based on Toei Animation’s mecha anime series titled Beast King GoLion, which aired 52 episodes from 1981-1982. The script for the movie is written by Ellen Shanman, and the film is produced by Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman, World Events Productions’ Bob Koplar, Rawson Marshall Thurber, and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman. As of now, the release date for the live-action Voltron movie has not been announced.
