Loretta Sage, a grumpy old woman, writes a romantic comedy novel based on a fictional hero, Dr. Angela Lovemore, and her love interest, Dash McMahon. To promote Lovemore’s new book, her publisher, Beth Hatten, insists that Loretta go on a book tour with Alan Caprison, a book cover model for Dash, even though she is alone after her husband’s death. After a disastrous start, mostly due to the fans’ interest in the character of Alan Dash, Loretta was kidnapped by billionaire Abigail Fairfax, who realized that Loretta was based on her book and good historical research that she had done. Fairfax has discovered a lost city on an isolated island in the Atlantic and believes that the Crown of Fire, the treasured treasure of ancient King Kalman and Queen Taha, is there. When he refuses to help decipher an ancient treasure map, Fairfax, fearing a volcano could destroy the site, chloroforms Loretta and takes him to the island.
Alan, who is secretly in love with Loretta, is responsible for her kidnapping. He brings back Jack Trainer, a former Navy SEAL turned CIA agent and meets him on the island to arrange a rescue. Without Alan’s help, Jack breaks into Fairfax Park and leaves Loretta. As the three try to escape, gunshots ring out, and Jack appears to have been shot. Loretta and Alan run off into the woods.
The two men spend a day shooting Fairfax’s henchmen, then spend a night in a cabin in the woods, before reaching a nearby town. Hearing the villagers singing folk songs, Loretta discovers that the crown is hidden in a cenote in the forest. However, before they can leave, Fairfax captures Loretta again. Alan chases after them in a car but is caught, and Fairfax forces them both to reveal the treasure’s location. At the cemetery, they discovered that it was not a treasure-filled monument of Taha and Kalaman’s power, but a secret place where the queen could mourn her husband’s death. His crown of fire is a red sea pearl that the king gathered to show him his love. The true treasure of the fairy tale is not the jewels, but the unconditional love between the king and queen.
Furious, Fairfax locks Loretta and Alan in the tomb as the volcano erupts. Rafi, one of Fairfax’s henchmen, having had a change of heart because of Fairfax’s cruelty to him, leaves the crowbar to help Loretta and Alan escape. He left Fairfax on the island. Beth arrives with the Coast Guard who rescue Loretta and Alan and arrest Fairfax. Loretta’s next book, based on her journey with Alan, is a disaster, and they share a kiss at the end of this book’s journey. In the mid-credits scene, Loretta and Alan attend a meditation class where they unexpectedly meet Jack, who is revealed to have somehow survived being shot in the head, and says that he do it with 10% of his brain.
