The new Marvel spin-off series, Agatha All Along, has faced several challenges since its inception. Originally announced as a sequel to WandaVision, the project experienced confusion with various working titles such as Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. Eventually, the series settled on re-using the catchy tune “Agatha All Along” from WandaVision.
Despite the return of Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness and her entertaining performance, the show has been criticized for being both plodding and incoherent, struggling to establish a clear portrayal of Agatha’s character. The series initially opens with a promising introduction of Agatha as a tough small-town cop, but quickly abandons this concept and returns her to present-day Westview, New Jersey.
Three years after the events of WandaVision, Agatha is awakened by a teen goth named Joe Locke, who urges her to embark on a magical journey to recover her powers. In her quest, Agatha recruits a group of fellow witches and faces off against a former romantic interest. The series also makes references to various “witch tropes” and challenges Hollywood ageism by casting middle-aged female leads.
While the series showcases the screwball gusto of Kathryn Hahn and incorporates fun witch references, it has been criticized for its execution. The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are currently available for streaming on Disney+.
