Jack Antonoff is receiving criticism for wearing earplugs during Katy Perry’s VMA performance, but his response has a touch of humor.
When Katy Perry performed a medley of her greatest hits at the VMAs, the camera showed Jack casually putting noise-canceling earplugs in his ears.
Many of Katy’s fans were unhappy with Jack’s actions and accused him of being disrespectful.
Jack addressed the criticism on X just a day after the VMAs. He confirmed using blue “hearos” brand earplugs and admitted to using them for a long time.
Additionally, he expressed his embarrassment but thanked those who covered the story, suggesting the issue was important to expose.
Fans speculated that Jack used the earplugs to block out Katy’s performance due to her past feud with Taylor, yet Taylor was seen enjoying the show. Katy has also been spotted at Taylor’s Eras Tour.
In 2014, Jack made comments comparing Katy’s music to Taylor Swift’s and had also contributed to producing Taylor’s 2016 album “Reputation.”
Moreover, he was seen eating a banana during Katy’s opening monologue at the 2017 VMAs, which was perceived as rude by some on the internet.
Critics on X expressed their opinions on what they saw as an impolite gesture, with some jumping to conclusions about Jack’s feelings toward Katy.
However, others pointed out that the earplugs were for hearing protection and allowed for an optimal concert experience.
