Brendan Gleeson is set to play a significant role in the upcoming live-action Spider-Man Noir series. Reports linking the Irish actor to the Amazon production surfaced in July, following the revelation of his involvement in Joker 2. While the specifics of his role have been kept under wraps, it is confirmed that he will portray the main antagonist in the series. Gleeson will be joining a star-studded cast that includes Nicolas Cage and the show is currently titled Spider-Noir. Other cast members include Lamorne Morris, Abraham Popoola, and Li Jun Li.
The series is scheduled to debut on MGM+’s linear channel before moving to Amazon Prime Video. The official description of the series outlines the story of an aging private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who must confront his past life as the city’s sole superhero. Spider-Noir marks Brendan’s first project since his role in the critically acclaimed film The Banshees of Inisherin. This role adds to his successful TV portfolio, including the crime drama Mr. Mercedes, where his character pursued a deranged killer, and his portrayal of President Donald Trump in The Comey Rule.
Brendan also received an Emmy for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the TV movie Into the Storm. With a string of hit films under his belt, such as In Bruges, The Guard, Cavalry, and Harry Potter, Spider-Noir is definitely a highly anticipated addition to his body of work. The series has been developed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Additionally, the project has been co-developed and will be executive produced by the team behind Into the Spider-Verse – Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal.
Harry Bradbeer is set to direct the first two episodes and serve as an executive producer. Spider-Noir is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios as part of the collaboration between Amazon and Sony to develop projects revolving around Sony-controlled Spider-Man Marvel characters. This project follows the announcement and subsequent cancellation of the first show under this partnership, Silk: Spider Society, in 2022.
