Phillip Schofield recently made an emotional TV appearance discussing the challenging period he faced after leaving This Morning. He shared his experience during the filming of Cast Away, a Channel 5 show where celebrities are marooned on a desert island for 10 days. This marked Schofield’s first television appearance since departing from This Morning after 21 years due to an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a younger male colleague. Schofield expressed how his life had unraveled over the past 18 months and how he isolated himself from the outside world. The show follows him as he attempts to survive solo on the remote Madagascan island of Nosy Ankarea, self-recording his experiences. Schofield also opened up about the toll the scandal took on his mental health, revealing that he had reached a very dark place and had gotten very close to taking drastic measures.
“Molly expressed concern, saying, ‘Can you imagine the impact this would have on us if you actually managed to accomplish this? Have you thought about what would happen and how it would affect me if you did this while I’m responsible?’
“That was enough to make me step back from the brink. I could have gone to the hospital, but I realized that news would spread. So, instead, I hurried to the family home and closed the gates behind me.”
Phillip Schofield opened up about his struggles and experiences, including his reluctance to leave his house until his mother fell critically ill. He also discussed his decision to come out as gay, expressing that while he understands the liberating nature of the experience for many, it has brought him more anguish than joy due to the impact on his older life. Despite this, he expressed gratitude for the unwavering love of his family. Schofield shared that he has spent a significant portion of his older life feeling sad and isolated, comparing it to being in his own personal lockdowns repeatedly. The emotional interview is part of a show called “Phillip Schofield: Cast Away,” which is set to air at 9pm on Monday on Channel 5.
