A group of college friends gathered together to celebrate Elise’s birthday at a rented mansion in the Catskills. The group consisted of Haley, Grant, Paxton, Paige, Madeline, Lucas, and Elise. The atmosphere was tense due to the recent breakup between Haley and Grant. To shift the focus away from the tension, they decided to have some fun by delving into the world of astrology and tarot cards. They found a box of mysterious old tarot cards in the mansion’s basement and decided to have Haley read their horoscopes using these ancient cards. As they each picked a card, the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement. Elise drew The High Priestess, Lucas drew The Hermit, Madeline drew The Hanged Man, Paige drew The Magician, and Paxton drew The Fool. Grant’s card turned out to be The Devil, and to everyone’s surprise, Haley drew the Death card. This unexpected turn of events added an even more mysterious and intriguing element to their birthday celebration.
After returning to campus, Elise is attacked and killed by a monstrous version of The High Priestess, while Lucas meets his end at the hands of The Hermit in a train station. These deaths correspond to the tarot readings the friends had received. Suspecting foul play with the deck, they seek out Alma Astron, a tarot expert they found online. Alma shares that the cards once belonged to an astrologer who served a Hungarian Count in the late 18th century. When the Count’s pregnant wife and child passed away as predicted, he sought revenge by ordering the astrologer’s daughter to be killed. Driven to grief and anger over the loss, the astrologer cursed the Count and his friends to die using her tarot cards, before taking her own life and casting a curse on the deck. Alma advises them to destroy the deck, which is still at the Catskills mansion, as it has been responsible for several tarot reading group massacres.
While traveling, the friends’ car breaks down, leading to an attack by The Hanged Man, resulting in the death of Madeline. After returning to campus alone, Paxton is then stalked by The Fool. Haley, Grant, and Paige attempt to return to the mansion to burn the cards, but are unable to do so and seek Alma’s assistance. Alma calls upon the astrologer’s spirit, but tragically meets her demise when the astrologer reads her fate as the Six of Swords.
Paige is fatally sawed in half by The Magician. Haley decides that if she reads the astrologer’s horoscope, this might end. As Grant is dragged away by The Devil, she does a reading on the astrologer, giving her Death. Eventually, Haley lets go of her mother’s grief, who died of illness, and the astrologer’s spirit is burned alongside the deck. Haley and Grant reconcile over their survival and reunite with Paxton, who survived after his roommate opened the elevator door at the last second, which made The Fool disappear.
