Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity who is terminated from her role as the host of a successful fitness TV show upon reaching 50 years of age. A questionable opportunity arises when she is introduced to a new substance that promises to rejuvenate her into a younger and more attractive version of herself. The catch is that she must split her time evenly between her current and rejuvenated bodies, spending one week in each.
“Elisabeth seizes the opportunity and is promptly re-hired by an unsuspecting Harvey under her new alias, Sue. “The one and only thing not to forget: you are one,” Elisabeth is warned. “You can’t escape from yourself.” However, this proves to be easier said than done, as we witness Sue expressing that “the balance isn’t working” and Elisabeth reporting a “slight misuse” of the drug. Does she intend to discontinue its use? “I’m fine,” she responds. “Everything’s fine.”
This film, titled “The Substance,” is written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, known for her work on the 2017 action thriller “Revenge.” The movie made its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Fargeat received the award for Best Screenplay.
