Tom Cruise Honors Val Kilmer’s Unforgettable Performance in “Top Gun”: “He Didn’t Even Have to Speak”

Tom Cruise recently reflected on his late co-star Val Kilmer’s magnetic presence in Top Gun (1986) and its long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick (2022), praising Kilmer’s ability to command the screen with minimal dialogue. Despite their characters’ rivalry in the original film, Cruise expressed deep admiration for Kilmer’s talent, calling his performance “exhilarating” and unforgettable.

Convincing Kilmer to Join the Original “Top Gun”

In a recent interview, Cruise recalled how Kilmer initially hesitated to take on the role of Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Maverick’s fierce competitor-turned-ally. “First of all, I felt so grateful that he decided to make the film,” Cruise shared. “We did a lot to get him in the movie. Originally, he just didn’t want to make the movie—he said, ‘I don’t want to be a supporting actor; I want to star in films.'”

Cruise revealed that both he and director Tony Scott went to great lengths to persuade Kilmer. “I was calling his agent, and Tony was hunting him down, even meeting him in an elevator, pleading, ‘Please, Val, please.'” Eventually, Kilmer agreed, bringing to life one of the most iconic characters in the film.

Kilmer’s Electrifying Presence on Screen

Despite having limited screen time in the original Top Gun, Kilmer left an indelible mark. Cruise emphasized how Kilmer’s performance elevated every scene they shared, particularly the infamous locker room confrontation where Iceman taunts Maverick by biting his lip.

“What I love about what he did and how he played it was that he just knew the right tone to hit,” Cruise explained. “He had to play it so you wanted these guys to be friends in the end. And I remember those scenes like they were yesterday—acting with him, watching him do that bite thing.”

Cruise described the experience of working with Kilmer as exhilarating. “When you’re acting with somebody and you just see they’re on fire, it’s electrifying. I love when a scene just goes to a different place. In Top Gun, he’s maybe in the movie for 10 minutes total—that’s the impact of an artist like that.”

Reuniting Decades Later for “Top Gun: Maverick”

Nearly four decades after the original film, Kilmer reprised his role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, this time as Admiral Kazansky, Maverick’s longtime friend and superior officer. Despite Kilmer’s real-life health struggles—having lost much of his voice due to throat cancer—his performance was deeply moving.

“It was amazing being on set for Top Gun: Maverick because it was like time had not passed,” Cruise said. “We were laughing, and it was joyous. And then we started acting, and you see it—he just became Iceman again.”

Cruise marveled at Kilmer’s ability to embody the character with such authenticity, even without speaking much. “The power this guy has, even not saying anything, to become that character—you see how even the sniff that he gave, he was Iceman. You saw the dynamic between these friends. It was very special, to say the least, for me personally.”

A Pivotal and Emotional Scene

One of the most poignant moments in Top Gun: Maverick is when Maverick visits Iceman, seeking guidance. The scene is emotionally charged, with Iceman communicating mostly through typed words on a screen, mirroring Kilmer’s own real-life challenges with speech.

“He didn’t even have to speak,” Cruise said. “That’s what he was able to do. Beautiful, really beautiful. A gift that he had and that he shared with all of us.”

A Touching Tribute to a Legendary Actor

Val Kilmer passed away on April 1 at the age of 65. Just days later, Cruise honored his friend during a presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

“I’d like to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,” Cruise said solemnly. “I really can’t tell you how much I admired his work, how much I thought of him as a human, and how grateful and honored I was when he joined the first Top Gun and came back for Top Gun: Maverick. He gave so much to all of us with his performances.”

Kilmer’s Final On-Screen Role

Top Gun: Maverick marked Kilmer’s final film appearance. In an earlier interview, Kilmer himself had spoken fondly of reuniting with Cruise.

“Coming back to work with Tom more than 30 years later, it was like no time had passed at all,” Kilmer said. “Being next to him instantly makes you better. That said, we blew a lot of takes laughing so much. It was really fun—really special.”

Legacy of a Cinematic Icon

Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Iceman remains one of the most memorable performances in action cinema. His ability to convey depth, rivalry, and camaraderie—often with just a glance or a smirk—cemented his place as a legendary actor.

For Tom Cruise, Kilmer’s talent was undeniable. “He was just one of those rare actors who could say so much without saying anything at all,” Cruise reflected. “That’s the mark of a true artist.”

As fans continue to celebrate Kilmer’s legacy, his performances in Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick stand as a testament to his extraordinary skill and enduring impact on cinema.
