In his extensive career spanning decades, Ben Stiller has become synonymous with big screen comedies such as “There’s Something About Mary,” “Zoolander,” and “Dodgeball,” as well as the successful “Meet the Parents” and “Night at the Museum” franchises. However, in recent years, the 58-year-old actor has chosen to step back from the spotlight, taking on smaller or supporting roles in both television and film.
Breaking his seven-year absence from a lead role, Stiller is set to star in the upcoming David Gordon Green comedy-drama “Nutcrackers.” The film follows Stiller as a smug, workaholic real estate professional who embarks on a journey to rural Ohio during the Christmas season to assist a child services worker in finding a home for his four recently orphaned nephews.
During the premiere of “Nutcrackers” at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Stiller shared his reasons for the long hiatus from substantial acting roles. He mentioned that his focus has been on directing and producing projects, expressing a desire to act but making a deliberate choice to only engage with projects that truly resonated with him. After receiving an email from David Gordon Green, Stiller felt an immediate connection with the script, ultimately leading to his return to a leading role.
Ben Stiller recently shared his excitement about an upcoming film that he is passionate about. He explained that a strong intuition drew him to the project, expressing a deep desire to work on the movie and meet the young actors involved. Stiller was particularly struck by the organic and emotionally genuine nature of the script and was eager to collaborate with director David. The movie features four real-life brothers, Homer, Ulysses, Atlas, and Arlo Janson, who make their acting debut in the film. Stiller was moved by their performances, which garnered standing ovations.
He reflected on how David approached him with the idea, emphasizing the heartfelt and genuine nature of the film. Stiller vividly described how the director reached out to him, expressing his belief in the incredible talent of the young actors. The idea of shooting on a farm in Ohio, complete with hogs and cats, further heightened the authenticity of the film-making experience.
Notably, the cast of the film also includes Linda Cardellini as the child services worker, alongside Tim Heidecker, Edi Patterson, and Toby Huss. Although the film has yet to secure a distributor or announce a release date, it is anticipated to hit screens in 2025.
