In the latest trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the actor, aged 59, is revealed to be voicing the character Shadow. The film features returning cast members such as Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter. The storyline teases an epic battle as Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails unite to face off against a formidable new foe, Shadow, who possesses unparalleled powers. The synopsis hints at an unlikely alliance being formed as Team Sonic strives to stop Shadow and protect the planet from imminent danger.
It was reported that Keanu Reeves would be playing the character Shadow, a super-powered hedgehog similar to Sonic with darker emotional undertones, in the upcoming movie. This news was first teased to CinemaCon 2024 attendees in Las Vegas on April 11, where Paramount Pictures hinted at Robotnik’s creation of Shadow in footage shown at the convention. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to release two years after the franchise’s second movie. Additionally, Paramount+ is working on a Knuckles live-action spinoff series starring Idris Elba as the red echidna, which will take place between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3.
Jim Carrey indicated that he was considering retirement from acting while he was promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022. During an interview with Access Hollywood, he mentioned that he was being quite serious about the possibility of stepping back from acting. However, he also stated that if he came across a script that he felt was truly significant and impactful, he might reconsider his decision. Carrey emphasized that the decision to continue acting would depend on the quality and importance of any future projects that came his way.
In the second Sonic the Hedgehog film, Carrey’s villainous character’s fate was left uncertain. The filmmakers hinted at Robotnik’s return on Feb. 2 with a clip featuring his laugh and a message implying his comeback. The new movie is directed by Jeff Fowler, who also directed the series’ previous two entries. The cast includes Krysten Ritter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Alyla Browne, and James Wolk. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to hit theaters on Dec. 20.
