Actress Elle Fanning recently starred in a commercial directed by Sofia Coppola for The House of Suntory. This collaboration marks a reunion between the actress and director, as Coppola previously filmed a Suntory ad with Keanu Reeves during the 20th anniversary of “Lost in Translation” in 2003. In the commercial, Fanning, who also appeared in Coppola’s film “The Beguiled,” hosts a dinner party in Japan. The nearly 60-second spot aims to capture the “vibrant world of Roku Gin,” showcasing the elegance and allure of the beverage.
Elle Fanning discussed her involvement in a recent campaign led by Sofia Coppola in an interview with Interview magazine. Coppola invited Fanning to join the project after Roku asked her to direct a commercial and shoot the campaign. The campaign featured cherry blossoms and drew inspiration from “The Virgin Suicides.” Additionally, the ad reunited the team from “The Beguiled,” including the costume designer and director of photography, Philippe Le Sourd. Fanning noted that working with Coppola’s loyal and skilled crew creates a unique and special environment, much like the atmosphere on a film set.
During the production of her 2017 film “The Beguiled,” Sofia Coppola mentioned that the shooting was completed in just two days, which was remarkably efficient. She emphasized the positive and pleasant atmosphere on her film sets and how everyone celebrated with a gin toast afterwards. Despite winning the best director prize at Cannes for the film, “The Beguiled” sparked controversy. The movie, featuring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, delves into the male-female dynamic and the inherent power struggle in their communication. Coppola aimed for Elle Fanning to embody the rebellious teenage character in the ensemble cast.
“Coppola later told IndieWire that she was ‘aware, obviously, that this history is a loaded one’ and that she wanted the casting to be as historically accurate as possible. In addition to collaborating with Sofia Coppola, Fanning has also appeared in Gia Coppola’s shorts.”
