This prestigious festival, renowned for its focus on excellence in cinematography, will award Sanada for his exceptional performance in a TV series, marking the first time the event acknowledges an actor for a small screen role.
As the enigmatic Lord Toranaga in “Shogun,” Sanada is currently garnering widespread acclaim. The show is poised to compete in multiple categories at the 2024 Emmys, with Sanada personally nominated for the best actor in a drama category and as a producer for the outstanding drama series.
Despite the global recognition brought by the success of “Shogun,” Sanada has been an iconic figure in Japanese cinema for decades, having appeared in over 50 Japanese features. His notable roles range from Yoji Yamada’s 2002 Oscar nominee “The Twilight Samurai” to Hollywood blockbusters such as “The Last Samurai,” “The Wolverine,” “47 Ronin,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Mortal Kombat.”
