Below is the plot explained based on the episodes:
1. Romance Dawn
The story begins with the execution of the legendary pirate captain, Gold Roger. Before his death, he revealed that he had hidden his immense treasure, the “One Piece,” somewhere in the Grand Line. This announcement sparked a feverish hunt among pirates to find the treasure and become the Pirate King.
Twenty-two years later, a young pirate named Monkey D. Luffy sets out on his adventure to search for the One Piece. Luffy, who gained the power to stretch his body like rubber after eating a Devil Fruit, finds himself on the ship of the ruthless pirate, Alvida. However, he manages to defeat Alvida and save her abused cabin boy, Koby, who dreams of becoming a Marine.
Luffy and Koby then head to a Marine base to obtain a map of the Grand Line. There, they meet and rescue Roronoa Zoro, a notorious pirate hunter who was imprisoned for standing up against the corrupt Marine Captain Morgan and his son, Helmeppo. Together, Luffy, Zoro, and Koby steal the map from Morgan’s safe with the help of Nami, a skilled cat burglar who also seeks to acquire the map.
In the chaos that ensues, Zoro helps the trio to escape from Morgan, who they finally defeat. Koby, inspired by Luffy’s kindness and sense of justice, decides to enlist in the Marines, while Luffy, Zoro, and Nami set sail to continue their journey and search for the One Piece.
2. The Man in the Straw Hat
In this episode, we see the protagonists Luffy, Zoro, and Nami getting captured by the notorious pirate Buggy the Clown. Luffy, who has swallowed the Grand Line map beforehand, gets to know about Buggy’s connections with his childhood idol, Shanks, who had gifted him with his prized straw hat. Buggy, who has the ability to split himself apart using the Chop-Chop Fruit powers, uses his advantage to threaten Luffy and tries to drown him when he refuses to hand over the map.
As Luffy faces this life-threatening situation, he recalls a childhood memory when Shanks had saved him from drowning and used an unknown power to protect him from a sea creature. Shanks had lost his left arm in the process, and Luffy had blamed himself for it. However, this memory helps Luffy gather the strength to fight back against Buggy.
Eventually, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami defeat Buggy and liberate the town he had imprisoned. Meanwhile, Garp, a high-ranking Marine officer, holds the corrupt Marine captain Morgan accountable for lying about the pirate attack. As a result, Helmeppo, Morgan’s son, decides to join the Marines along with his friend Koby.
Lastly, we see Nami secretly reaching out to an anonymous figure, indicating that she has some hidden agenda related to the Grand Line map.
3. Tell No Tales
In need of a new boat, the trio — now dubbed the Straw Hat Crew — stops at Syrup Village in the Gecko Islands for a larger ship. Luffy likes a ship with a host figurehead, but is informed by Usopp, a goofy dockworker, that the ship is not for sale. Usopp takes them to meet the shipyard owner and his best friend, Kaya, a rich, sickly orphan, to ask about the ship. Meanwhile, Garp takes Koby under his wing, knowing of his connection to Luffy. Luffy and Usopp bond over Luffy knowing the latter’s pirate father Yasopp, who was part of Shanks’ crew. Kaya’s butler, Klahadore, reveals himself as Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates. Planning to take over Kaya’s business, he kills her lawyer Merry, gets Zoro knocked out, and has their bodies dumped in a well. Usopp flees for help but no one believes him until Koby arrives with the Marines.
4. The Pirates Are Coming
After several failed attempts to climb out of the well, Zoro remembers his childhood and the death of his friend Kuina, who inspired him to be a swordsman. The memory pushes him to successfully climb out. Usopp brings the Marines but Kuro dissuades them and hands over Luffy, unconscious after eating poisoned soup meant for Kaya. Zoro rescues Luffy from the Marines and battles Kuro’s subordinates while Luffy takes on Kuro. They save Kaya and Kuro flees the island. Kaya rewards them with the ship the crew had wanted, which Luffy dubs the Going Merry in honor of Kaya’s lawyer. Usopp accepts his invitation to join the crew. The Marines are right on their tail however, as Garp attacks them at sea. Luffy reveals that Garp is his grandfather, to the crew’s shock.
5. Eat at Baratie!
In the story, Luffy, the protagonist, reminisces about his childhood when his grandfather had encouraged him to join the Marines. In the present, Luffy manages to outsmart the Marines and escapes with the help of his grandfather, Garp. They seek refuge at a floating restaurant called Baratie, where they meet Sanji, an incredibly talented chef. Luffy and Sanji quickly become friends, and Sanji offers to cook for Luffy and his crew.
However, their peaceful respite is short-lived when Garp hires a Warlord, Dracule Mihawk, to capture Luffy alive. It is revealed that the Warlords are seven powerful pirates turned privateers for the World Government, who realized that it was more beneficial to have the pirates as allies. Meanwhile, Helmeppo explains to Koby about the Seven Warlords of the Sea and their immense power.
When Mihawk, a Warlord who holds the title of the world’s greatest swordsman, arrives, Zoro challenges him to a duel to win Mihawk’s title. Zoro has idolized Mihawk since he was a child and sees this as his chance to prove himself. Unfortunately, the battle doesn’t go as planned, and Zoro is severely injured. It becomes clear that Zoro is no match for Mihawk’s swordsmanship skills.
Despite this, Mihawk comes to respect Zoro and Luffy’s resolve, and he lets them go free. Zoro, who is humbled by his defeat, swears to Luffy that he will never lose again before losing consciousness.
6. The Chef and the Chore Boy
After Zoro’s defeat in a battle with Mihawk, the owner of Baratie, Zeff, takes care of the severely injured swordsman. Although Zeff is unsure if Zoro will survive, he does everything in his power to help him. Meanwhile, Sanji, the chef at Baratie, reveals his history with Zeff and his dream of finding the All Blue, a mystical sea that contains rare spices and fish. Sanji also decides to join Luffy’s crew, who are known as the Straw Hats, in their journey to find the One Piece, the ultimate treasure of the Grand Line.
As the Straw Hats continue their journey, they encounter Koby, a young naval officer who learns about Luffy’s relationship with his grandfather, Vice Admiral Garp. Later on, they come across the notorious pirate and fish-man, Arlong, who is in search of the Grand Line map. Arlong has taken Buggy’s head hostage to find him, and he threatens to kill Luffy unless he hands over the map. In a shocking turn of events, Nami, who had previously helped the Straw Hats, reveals that she is actually a member of Arlong’s crew.
Arlong throws Luffy into the sea and leaves with Nami, but Sanji rescues him. Luffy feels defeated as a captain and believes that he has failed his crew. However, his spirits are lifted when Zoro awakens and swears to stand by him as his first mate. Sanji also officially joins the Straw Hats as their cook.
With renewed confidence, Luffy decides to go after Nami and defeat Arlong. He carries Buggy’s head in his bag to help them track down Arlong and retrieve the Grand Line map. The Straw Hats continue their adventure with newfound determination, facing numerous challenges and battles as they sail towards the Grand Line.
7. The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo
Under the guidance of Buggy, the captain of the pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates make their way to Conomi Island, where Nami’s hometown, Coco Village, is under the rule of a notorious fish-man pirate named Arlong. Upon reaching the village, the Straw Hats meet Nami’s adoptive sister, Nojiko, who tells them the tragic story of how Arlong killed their mother when they were still children.
Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, interrogates Zeff, the owner of the Baratie restaurant, about Luffy’s whereabouts. Garp reveals that he doesn’t want Luffy to meet the same fate as the legendary pirate Gold Roger, who was executed by the Marines.
The Straw Hats soon learn that Nami has been working for Arlong since her mother’s death, trying to raise 100 million berry to buy back her village’s freedom. However, when Nami finally collects the money to pay Arlong, he double-crosses her and orders the Marine Captain Nezumi to confiscate the entire sum.
Heartbroken and despairing, Nami has a breakdown and attempts to cut off the tattoo on her arm that symbolizes her allegiance to Arlong. However, Luffy stops her and convinces her to join forces with the Straw Hats to take down Arlong and free her village.
As the Straw Hats band together to fight Arlong and his fish-man crew, the battle becomes intense and chaotic. Will the Straw Hats be able to emerge victorious and save Coco Village from Arlong’s tyranny?
8. Worst in the East
After realizing that the notorious fishman Arlong’s tower contained Nami’s painful memories of cartography for over 8 long years, Luffy decides to take action and destroy the tower. The maps in the tower were vital for Arlong’s goal of taking over the four seas. As a result of Luffy’s actions, Arlong is defeated and Nami, along with her village, is freed from his tyranny.
The situation becomes complicated when Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, orders Koby and Helmeppo to arrest the Straw Hat Pirates despite knowing that they are innocent. However, Koby and Helmeppo refuse Garp’s orders, standing by their belief of doing what is right.
In the meantime, Luffy is forced to face his grandfather in an unwilling fight. Even though Garp has the upper hand, Luffy doesn’t back down, standing firm in his resolve. This, in turn, impresses Garp, who decides to relent. Garp had been testing Luffy to make sure that this was really what he wanted.
To make matters worse, Captain Nezumi takes revenge on Luffy by putting out a wanted poster of him, fulfilling his dream of having one. However, Garp, impressed with Koby and Helmeppo’s will to stand by what is right, decides to personally train them.
As the Straw Hat Pirates sail towards the Grand Line as a crew for the first time, a Marine smoking two cigars burns Luffy’s bounty poster, indicating the start of an even more exciting adventure for the crew.
