Meryl Streep found herself at the center of a lighthearted joke during the 2024 Emmy Awards on September 15, and she handled it gracefully. When Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney, who are married to each other and costars on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, took the stage to present the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for which Streep, 75, was a nominee, they began joking about the significance of the category.
McElhenney started by saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place. They provide crucial support when it’s really needed.” Olson then remarked, “Much like a jockstrap. What you were describing sounds very much like a jockstrap.” Her husband initially acted unaware, but then agreed,
“These roles make sure everything stays secure. Without this support, the whole package falls apart. Alright, this does sound like a jockstrap.” As the audience erupted in laughter, Olson sarcastically asked if he was “calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?” McElhenney quickly responded “no!” before the camera cut to Streep looking surprised in the audience and mouthing, “My god.” He then sheepishly added, “I’m so sorry, Meryl.” Although Streep did not win the award, she seemed to have a pleasant evening at the awards show, sitting in the front row next to her Only Murders in the Building costar and rumored love interest, Martin Short.
The two were seen in a video engaged in conversation after Short finished presenting earlier in the show and took his seat next to Streep.
