Kate Winslet, 48, recently shared some fascinating insights from her time filming “Titanic.” During a panel at an advanced screening of her upcoming film “Lee,” the British actress revealed behind-the-scenes details about the iconic scene where her character, Rose, was floating on a door in the Atlantic Ocean while Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack Dawson, met a tragic fate. Winslet described the filming of the scene, noting that the tank was actually waist-height at the time, dispelling the myth that it was much deeper.
As I recall, the situation was quite challenging. I remember feeling the urge to use the restroom and having to navigate my way through the set to get there. The water tank was quite a distance away, and I had to carefully maneuver my way to the edge of the tank, which was about 20 feet away. Climbing in and out of the tank was no easy feat, and it was definitely a struggle.
Moreover, the water level was up to my waist, and I vividly remember Leonardo DiCaprio kneeling down in the water. I hope I’m not sharing too much detail, as the film’s director, James Cameron, might not approve. What was truly remarkable about the tank was that it had an infinity design, with water constantly flowing, creating a soothing and immersive atmosphere on set.
During the premiere of “Titanic” in London, the actress was unable to attend due to being hospitalized with food poisoning. She also missed the release of the film in the U.S. as she was attending the funeral of a boyfriend. Reflecting on these events, she remarked that it was a reminder to prioritize the things that matter.
In a recent interview, Kate Winslet opened up about the iconic “I’m flying” scene from the movie Titanic. Despite its romantic appearance on screen, Winslet revealed that filming the scene was far from smooth sailing. She described it as a messy experience, citing various challenges that they encountered during the shoot.
Winslet humorously remarked on how Leonardo DiCaprio’s romantic portrayal in the scene made him a heartthrob for many young girls. However, she confessed that the reality of filming the scene was quite different from its perception. The actress explained that the repeated kissing scenes caused makeup mishaps, with her pale makeup rubbing off on DiCaprio’s face, leaving her looking like she had been indulging in a caramel chocolate bar between takes. This led to multiple makeup touch-ups for both of them, adding to the chaotic nature of the shoot.
Additionally, Winslet shared that the unpredictable nature of the sunset caused further complications. Director James Cameron wanted a very specific lighting for the scene, and the changing sunset made it challenging to capture the desired visual effect. This resulted in multiple reshoots, adding to the frustration of the cast and crew.
Despite the challenges, Winslet humorously mentioned that DiCaprio couldn’t stop laughing during the takes, adding a light-hearted touch to the otherwise chaotic filming process.
