Star Auli’i Cravalho has recently shared her excitement about reprising her role as the main character in the highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2. In a recent interview, Cravalho expressed her delight in working on the musical fantasy adventure sequel and assured fans that they can expect to see Moana in a whole new light as the story unfolds. It has been widely acknowledged that Disney’s animated movies are among the finest in the medium. However, even a powerhouse like Disney has faced occasional setbacks. Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana, praised the character’s development over the course of the franchise. The Hawaiian-born actor expressed that she personally identified with Moana’s growth and believes that audiences will resonate with this sentiment as well. According to Cravalho, Moana’s character is continuously evolving and pushing herself further beyond her comfort zone.
In a surprising move, Disney announced in February that a sequel to “Moana” is in the works. The sequel was originally planned as a Disney+ series but has now been reworked into a big-screen sequel to continue the story of Moana, the daughter of a village chief. A key highlight of the announcement was the return of Auli’i Cravalho as the voice of Moana, and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, the strong-willed shapeshifting demigod. Joining them are Temeura Morrison as Tui, Alan Tudyk as Heihei, and pop star Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, all returning from the original film. Additionally, David Derrick Jr. is set to take over the director’s chair for the sequel, replacing John Musker and Ron Clements.
The lesser-known dinosaur movie from Disney was originally envisioned to have a darker and more unconventional tone. The film had a turbulent journey to the big screen, taking 16 years to materialize.
Regarding the animated sequel, Auli’i Cravalho will reprise her role as the voice of Moana. However, she will not be involved in the live-action adaptation, which is a continuation of the original film. The live-action version will feature Australian teenage actor Catherine Laga’aia as the princess, with Dwayne Johnson cast as Maui and also serving as a producer under his Seven Bucks production company. Johnson has confirmed that production for the live-action Moana will commence in August, targeting a release date of July 10, 2026.
