Sebastian Stan mentioned in a recent British GQ interview that he transitioned from playing a young Donald Trump in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice to reprising his role as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the MCU. As a result, he suggested that there might be some minor cross-contamination between the two characters in his performance.
In the upcoming film “Thunderbolts,” directed by Jake Schreier, Stan’s Bucky Barnes will join forces with morally ambiguous Marvel characters such as Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko), and the enigmatic Bob (Lewis Pullman). Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes, put in a lot of effort to get in shape for the role, only to face a setback when the film was temporarily shelved due to writers’ and actors’ strikes last summer. Stan expressed his frustration, mentioning his age and the hard work he had put into preparing for the role.
Stan had previously mentioned that he initially felt uncertain about portraying Trump onscreen. He confessed, “It’s funny, I felt similarly about a few things I’ve worked on. My initial reaction is, ‘Wow, how the hell am I going to do this?'” At that time, he also revealed that his friends and family had advised him against taking on the role of the controversial political figure. “I had people tell me I don’t look like him. I had people tell me that it’s not safe for me to do it,” Stan said. “I had people say that I shouldn’t try to alienate half the country.”
In a recent interview with GQ, Stan expressed his enthusiasm for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Stan expressed his desire to share a scene with Downey Jr., emphasizing that he believes no one else could pull off the role as effectively. He cited Downey Jr.’s performance in Tropic Thunder as evidence of the actor’s versatility. Additionally, it’s worth noting that The Apprentice is set to premiere in theaters on October 11, with Thunderbolts scheduled for release on May 2, 2025.
