Discover Why ‘Rivals’ on Disney+ Will Capture the Hearts of Jilly Cooper Enthusiasts

The opening scene of Rivals (Disney+) sets the tone for the series with a bold and provocative display of sex, class, and the extravagance of the Eighties. The main character, Rupert Campbell-Black, is depicted engaging in a scandalous encounter on Concorde, accompanied by the iconic song “Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer. The unapologetically audacious nature of the characters is further emphasized by their behavior, including adultery, smoking, hunting, and off-color humor without concern for modern sensitivities. Additionally, the show portrays a distinctly macho portrayal of men, with Campbell-Black, described as the “handsomest man in England,” presented as a Tory politician with whom viewers might empathize. This unapologetic portrayal could have implications for the Conservative Party.

The plot revolves around high drama and sexual tension surrounding an ITV franchise in the Cotswolds. Lord Tony Baddingham, played by David Tennant, is the ruthless boss of Corinium who hires fiery Irish journalist Declan O’Hara, portrayed by Aidan Turner, as his star interviewer. O’Hara is accompanied by Maud, his highly-strung wife, and Taggie, his Bambi-eyed daughter. All of them are neighbors of Campbell-Black, a former Olympic show jumping champion turned Minister for Sport, who lives in a grand estate with his dogs.

The casting has been successful, though purists may note that Campbell-Black, as described in the book, was blond-haired and blue-eyed. Alex Hassell’s portrayal has won approval, with the actor bringing charisma to the role. Hassell’s approach to his character has also been noted, with the actor sharing that the cast was instructed to treat him as the most attractive man in the world, which has been helpful for the audience as well.

The character of Campbell-Black initially comes across as a bounder and a cad towards Taggie, but the audience ends up rooting for a romance between them, despite the fact that she is only 20. The show unapologetically stays true to the spirit and sexual politics of the age in which it was written. The only modern update is the inclusion of male nudity for every shot of naked female breasts. Notably, a full-frontal scene on the tennis court has garnered attention for its impact on viewers.

In the new TV series “Rivals,” writer Dominic Treadwell-Collins skillfully plays with the period setting and the advantage of hindsight. The character Baddingham humorously remarks, “The BBC have put Top of the Pops against us in the schedule. So you need to be more popular than Jimmy Savile,” which sets the tone for the series. The soundtrack is filled with iconic hits from artists like Eurythmics, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Paul Simon, and The Bangles, although some younger viewers might find the scene of guests enthusiastically dancing to The Birdie Song at a garden party a bit perplexing.

Class distinctions are a significant theme in the story, with Rutshire being portrayed as a place filled with snobbish individuals. The arrival of self-made electronics millionaire Freddie Jones and his wife sparks gossip and amusement among the locals. Danny Dyer’s portrayal of the character is commendable, bringing unexpected tenderness to his friendship with romantic novelist Lizzie Vereker, played by Katherine Parkinson. The supporting cast, including Rufus Jones and Oliver Chris, also deliver laugh-out-loud moments with their performances.

The series consists of eight episodes, with a slight dip in momentum towards the end when the script focuses more on the business of regional television franchises rather than the themes of love and passion. Nevertheless, “Rivals” remains a delightful escape from modern life.

In a recent interview, 89-year-old Cooper expressed a sense of nostalgia, remarking on the decrease in romantic liaisons in modern entertainment. “Rivals” certainly compensates for this, featuring numerous intimate scenes. Beyond its sensual aspects, the show also portrays depth and warmth, much like its creator.

“Rivals” is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 18th.
