The late David Bowie, a renowned artist, would have been intrigued by the advancements in artificial intelligence, according to a childhood friend. George Underwood, who had a long-lasting friendship with Bowie, mentioned that the artist would have been fascinated by AI but would have also recognized its potential downsides. Underwood highlighted Bowie’s interest in technological advancements, such as being one of the first major artists to sell an album online. He also mentioned Bowie’s foresight when discussing the impact of the internet on the world.
Underwood emphasized that while Bowie would have found AI fascinating, he would have also been cautious about its potential pitfalls, particularly in relation to art and the risk of unauthorized copying and duplication. He also shared insights into Bowie’s view on isolation and how it influenced his artistic themes.
In honor of his late friend, Underwood created a new oil painting, “We Love Dancing,” in support of the charity War Child, which Bowie also supported. The painting is part of a charity auction featuring several artists and will be showcased in the Sound & Vision exhibition at London’s 180 Studios. Underwood expressed hope that the event would become a yearly occurrence to support children in need.
