Could ‘Gladiator II’ Finally Win Denzel Washington His Third Oscar?

Denzel Washington has established a remarkable legacy of delivering exceptional performances throughout his illustrious career, which has spanned decades. In addition to his acting prowess, he has also demonstrated his directorial abilities in recent years. With two Oscars already to his name, Washington’s portrayal in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” positions him as a potential contender for a third Academy Award.

The sequel to the 2000 Best Picture winner revolves around Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), the grandson of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who finds himself thrust into the harsh realities of slavery. Determined to rise above his circumstances, Lucius resolves to enter the arena as a gladiator under the mentorship of the influential figure, Macrinus, portrayed by Denzel Washington. Macrinus not only serves as a guiding force to Lucius but also becomes embroiled in the power struggles opposing emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).

Anticipations are high for Washington’s potential nomination for Best Supporting Actor, alongside esteemed actors such as Samuel L. Jackson for “The Piano Lesson,” Clarence Maclin for “Sing Sing,” Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain,” and Stanley Tucci for “Conclave.” If nominated, this would mark Washington’s 10th Oscar nomination, adding to his previous recognitions, including two nominations for Best Supporting Actor and seven nominations for Best Actor for his exceptional performances in films such as “Malcolm X,” “The Hurricane,” “Training Day,” “Flight,” “Fences,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”

Denzel Washington has received ten Oscar nominations, which ties him with Bette Davis and Laurence Olivier in terms of nominations. If he were to win, he would join the exclusive club of three-time Oscar winners. At present, Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn hold the record for the most nominations, with twelve each and Meryl Streep holds the record for the most nominations with 21.

Katharine Hepburn holds the record for the most acting Oscar wins with four victories and also holds the record for the biggest gap between acting Oscar wins with 48 years between her respective wins.
