After a decade-long hiatus from acting, Cameron Diaz is making a highly anticipated return in Netflix’s upcoming action-comedy titled “Back in Action.” This film marks a reunion with her “Any Given Sunday” co-star Jamie Foxx, and it promises to be packed with a blend of exhilarating stunts and clever, self-referential humor.
Directed by Seth Gordon, known for his work on “Horrible Bosses,” “Back in Action” follows Diaz and Foxx as they portray two former CIA agents residing in London. Their quiet lives are turned upside down when their true identities are uncovered, compelling them to re-enter the thrilling world of espionage. The film’s tone can be compared to an intriguing mix of “John Wick” and “Spy Kids,” suggesting a lighthearted take on intense action sequences.
The film’s first trailer sets the tone for Diaz’s comeback, showcasing her character Emily declaring, “Tonight, something clicked. For the first time in a really long time, I felt alive again. I felt like the bitch again.” This line is juxtaposed with high-octane scenes of her and her on-screen husband, played by Foxx, taking down a variety of villains with impressive fight choreography.
As the plot unfolds, the couple faces the challenge of explaining their covert history to their curious children. One child humorously quips, “Like Jason Bourne!?” to which Foxx’s character responds, “Yeah, but we remember stuff,” adding a layer of comedy to their predicament. Their daughter then interjects with comic disbelief, saying, “I knew you guys were lying about something, but I never thought you were cool enough to be spies.”
The trailer teases an array of action-packed sequences, including adrenaline-fueled motorcycle chases, high-speed boat takeovers, and a thrilling scene of them riding an avalanche while inside a deconstructed airplane. Foxx’s character excitedly reminisces, “Just like old times, baby. Just like old times!” This line not only highlights their chemistry as a duo but also serves as a nod to Diaz’s long-awaited return to the big screen, marking their third collaboration following the 1999 sports drama “Any Given Sunday” and the 2014 musical “Annie.”
Rounding out the ensemble cast are notable actors including Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, Rylan Jackson, and Glenn Close, although they do not appear in the initial teaser.
