“3 Body Problem” is an adaptation of the first book of the acclaimed sci-fi trilogy written by Liu Cixin. Set in China during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, the story revolves around Ye Wenjie, a young and brilliant astrophysics prodigy, portrayed by newcomer Zine Tseng. Ye works for a mysterious government sect and is tasked with making contact with alien life. A decision she makes during this period has far-reaching consequences in the present day, where some of the world’s most brilliant minds are dying under strange circumstances.

The cast features Wong as Da Shi, a former intelligence officer who is investigating the unusual deaths. He finds himself at the center of a conspiracy involving an alien presence that is manipulating a group of scientists in the U.K. known as the Oxford 5. Alongside Wong, Cunningham plays Wade, the head of the world’s most elite intelligence operation. The two actors share a playful relationship both on and off-screen, with Cunningham joking that his co-star hates him, but hides it well.
