Actor John Ashton, renowned for portraying the by-the-book detective in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, passed away at the age of 76 in Ft. Collins, Colorado, after battling cancer. His publicist, Alan Somers, confirmed the news. Ashton, born in Springfield, Massachusetts on Feb. 22, 1948, was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather.
He graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts. With a career spanning 50 years, Ashton appeared in close to 100 movies, debuting in 1973’s “The Psychopath.” He was most notably recognized for his role as Det. Sgt. John Taggart in the first two “Beverly Hills Cop” movies alongside Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. He reprised his role in 2024’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”
The late actor, John Ashton, had an extensive filmography including roles in “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “She’s Having a Baby,” “Midnight Run,” “Little Big League,” and “Gone Baby Gone.” He also appeared on television, portraying Willie Joe Garr in several episodes of “Dallas” and making guest appearances on shows like “Columbo,” “Police Squad!,” and “Hardball.”
John Ashton’s dedication to his craft and his ability to bring characters to life on screen will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Robin Hoye, three children, three step-children, a grandson, two sisters, and a brother.
