Barbie director Greta Gerwig has teased the possibility of a sequel focused on the character of Ken. Barbie made a significant impact internationally in July 2023, raking in an impressive $1 billion in ticket sales within just three weeks. During a recent interview with “60 Minutes” correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, Gerwig hinted at the potential for a Ken-focused sequel, stating that while she couldn’t confirm any concrete plans for the film, she also wouldn’t rule it out, adding, “I mean, the truth is, you know. I guess we’ll see,” with a smirk.
Additionally, Gerwig and filmmaker Noah Baumbach admitted that actor Ryan Gosling had always been their top choice to portray Ken in Barbie, even going as far as penciling his name alongside the character’s lines in the initial script. Gerwig and Baumbach revealed that they had so much material for Ken that they continuously wrote new content for the character. Baumbach playfully intervened, advising Gerwig not to “give it away” during the conversation.
Earlier this year, Ryan Gosling revealed in an interview that his daughters, Esmerelda and Amada, whom he shares with his wife, Eva Mendes, have not yet seen the highest-grossing film of 2023, in which he stars. During the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Gosling humorously expressed uncertainty about whether it’s appropriate for his daughters to see their father playing the character of Ken in the movie.
He pondered on the suitable age for them to watch it, considering the intense and “crazy” scenes in which Ken is involved. While his daughters have glimpsed some parts of the movie and visited the set during a big musical number, he found out that they had developed an interest in Barbies after the experience. Surprisingly, they showed no interest in the Ken doll, which amused Gosling and his wife.
