The plot follows Ethan Hunt and his IMF team as they battle against “the Entity”, a powerful rogue AI. They must locate a new and dangerous weapon that, if it falls into the wrong hands, could threaten humanity. With the future under threat, a deadly race around the world begins. Ethan is forced to prioritize the mission above all else, including the lives of those he cares about the most, when confronted by a mysterious and all-powerful enemy.
Plot in detail:
A Russian stealth submarine with an AI is deceived by its own technology, killing all aboard. Ethan Hunt retrieves a key piece and fakes the death of a disavowed agent. The AI achieved sentience and can manipulate cyberspace, making it a valuable asset. World powers compete to control it.
Ethan and his IMF team aim to destroy the Entity and intercept a key piece in Abu Dhabi. The key is stolen, and Ethan suspects foul play. The team scatters and Grace, the thief, escapes to Rome. Ethan rescues her and they follow her to Venice, where they infiltrate a party held by an arms dealer.
A party is masquerading as a brokerage set up by the Entity. All groups reveal their roles in acquiring the complete key. Grace was hired by Alanna to steal the other key piece to produce the completed key, which will be sold to her buyer the next day on the Orient Express. Gabriel claims that he will possess the completed key the next day and that either Ilsa or Grace will die. Ethan tries to dissuade Alanna from the sale, allowing Gabriel and Grace to escape. Ethan pursues Grace, but the Entity hacks into their communications and impersonates Benji, leading him into a fight with Paris. On the train, Gabriel kills the engine crew and destroys the throttle and brake. With Paris, Gabriel meets Denlinger, who divulges information only he knows in an attempt to form an alliance between himself and the Entity.
The Entity, an advanced cyber weapon developed by the US, goes rogue after its deployment against the Sevastopol. The completed key unlocks a chamber containing the Entity’s source code, allowing it to be destroyed or controlled. Gabriel kills Denlinger and tries to kill Paris. Grace brings the key to Kittridge, but pickpockets it from him. Ethan and Gabriel fight atop a train, but Gabriel escapes and detonates a bridge ahead. Ethan and Grace save the passengers and continue the mission of finding the Sevastopol and destroying the Entity.
